The school guidance counselor has a traditional role in establishing assistance for students in P-12 the grade. Rather than act as gatekeepers and sorters of students for differential learning opportunities, guidance counselors in these schools advocate for all students to have access to challenging and meaningful learning (Hart & Jacob, 1992 ). In schools that promote inclusive norms, guidance counselors work as leaders and curriculum developers to expand students' access to knowledge. For example, under the leadership of counselors teachers are assigned to small groups of students to implement the individualized educational and career plan. This two-year curriculum for seventh- and eighth-graders provides tools to direct students' thinking through future education plans in the context of their own aspirations, goals, and dreams. It requires students to take responsibility for reflecting on all dimensions of their expectations, interests, and values. Along with phasing out the school's lower-track classes, this program has contributed to a doubling of the enrollment of the school's graduating eighth-graders in the college-preparatory track in the district's high school.
A lot of schools that offer equal access to knowledge to every student plus engage every student in opportunity often reserved only for groups clearly are doing more than simply regrouping students. Educators in these schools understand that, though "life" may deem some people more suitable for some roles than others, it is not for schools to serve that function. In these schools, counselors really believe that human intelligence is multifaceted and that they can develop the intelligence of all students by reforming teaching plus learning to match that view. These are schools that envision themselves as authentic, inclusive communities of learners plus that work daily to make that image a reality.
